Mother to Mother has dozens of volunteers with a passion for helping new mothers find the joy in motherhood. Our volunteers assist in this capacity by providing telephone and group support, community education in the forms of prenatal class presentations and health fairs, and participate in various fundraising activities. Day of Remembrance: Memorial Day, May 30th, 2011

Whether it is family, loved ones, friends or friends of friends, losing someone that you knew and cared for is something that is very difficult to explain.

I heard about the loss of my high school friend, Harry Lew a few days after he passed. I was in a meeting and was both unsure and unable to react. I often think "things happen for a reason" but in this case I do not agree. Events like this make me feel helpless. It feels so unreal because the last time that I saw and hung out with Harry he was laughing, telling us about his experiences, and of course tricking for everyone to enjoy. He was only 21 years old and had the ability to keep any event fun and interesting. Harry could always make us laugh no matter the situation. I am sorry that I did not have the opportunity to keep in touch to the best of my ability.
Harry you are in my prayers, I wish you the best and hope that you are resting in Peace. We miss you!

What is National Volunteer Week?

National Volunteer Week gives us the opportunity to acknowledge the impact that volunteers have in our communities. The week began in 1974 when President Nixon signed an executive order establishing an annual celebration of volunteering. This year commemorates the two-year anniversary of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act and the Volunteer Generation Fund.

For the Santa Cruz Volunteer Center, National Volunteer Week is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek ways to engage in our community. There are an infinite number of ways to get involved. You name it and there is a volunteer in our community making it happen. It is our goal to highlight volunteer stories throughout the year.

What makes National Volunteer Week special?
As a nation we have the opportunity to hear the inspiring stories of everyday individuals who are dedicating their time to improving our communities and volunteers all across the country receive national recognition for their efforts.

1. Daily Point of Light Award:
The Daily Point of Light Award honors individuals and volunteer groups who are helping to meet critical needs in their communities and creating change every day.
2. Corporate Engagement Award:
The Corporate Engagement Award of Excellence honors companies that have made a commitment to building strong employee volunteer programs and meet the Principles of Excellence for Workplace Volunteering.

Teens Helping Seniors Bridge the Digital Divide

Youthserve teen helping local seniors at Senior Tech Day

According to a recent Pew Internet Research Report, while social media use across all age groups continues to show steady growth, older Americans have stepped up as the fastest growing demographic.

Computer use among Americans 65 and older has doubled in the past 10 years and Internet usage among that age group has more than tripled, according to the Pew Internet Project.

Youthserve, a program of the Volunteer Center, and the Senior Center at Louden Nelson have joined forces to help local seniors who want to take the leap into the digital realm.

This past weekend they hosted their first-ever Senior Tech Day where local seniors had the opportunity to participate in a series of workshops providing them with the skills to connect with social media, utilize cell phone features, and upload pictures from the cameras to computers.

Youthserve has mobilized a group of young people to launch the project, develop workshops and volunteer their time to share their online expertise. All workshops are lead by local teens.

“As the generation coined “Digital Natives”, young people are the perfect candidates for helping seniors learn how to connect with online technology”, states YouthServe Program Coordinator Woubzena Jifar.

“We are very excited to launch this particular project. We are always looking for creative and meaningful ways to engage teens in our community. This was first workshop of what will hopefully be an ongoing opportunity for both seniors and teens”, states Jifar.

The next Senior Tech Day is scheduled for May 14th from 12-2:30PM at the Louden Nelson Center (301 Center St). All seniors are invited to attend free of charge and are asked to bring any devices they own that they are hoping to learn more about.

YouthServe organizes year round service learning opportunities for youth and teens ages 11-18. The program utilizes community service as tool for civic engagement and skill development. Additionally, Youthserve provides an online listing of youth friendly opportunities, and phone or in-person consultation.

In the last year, Youthserve teens have provided over 4500 hours of service.

3. The Homeless Garden Project

(Local food Project)

The Homeless Garden Project in Santa Cruz, California, provides jobs and life training for homeless people within the therapeutic context of an organic garden. Meaningful and productive work within the garden or related enterprises is the basis for the healing process necessary for many homeless people to re-enter the culture of work. This process is also one of community building — allowing for renewed relationships as community members reap the rewards of bountiful organic produce and a decreased population of homeless members.

1. SNAPSHOT DAY 2011:

This is an annual one-day event in May. Spanning more than 300 miles of coast from Pacifica in the north to Morro Bay in the south, Snapshot Day volunteers monitor water quality and collect samples to assess the health of as many streams as possible. Snapshot Day is a great excuse to explore our local streams while collecting important water quality information.

Five ways that you can become more sustainable:

1. MAKE the SWITCH from plastic grocery bags to reusable bags.

2. SWITCH your light bulbs to fluorescent light bulbs.
"Replacing just one 60-watt incandescent light bulb with a CFL will save you $30 over the life of the bulb. CFLs also last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs, use two-thirds less energy, and give off 70 percent less heat (reference)."

3. UNPLUG IT.
Unplug any appliance that is not in use, and save $ on your next electricity bill.

4. SHOWER TIME.
Cut your shower time down by 2 minutes everyday and you will save approximately 150 gallons of water a month.

5. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Recycle anything you can think of; paper, plastic, glass, etc."By recycling half of your household waste, you can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide annually (reference)."

Whole Foods Market's Nickels for Nonprofits

According to the Senior Economic Security Index (SESI), a research project developed by The Institute on Assets and Social Policy at Brandeis University and Demos, 1 in 3 senior households have no money left after meeting essential expenses to modify their home for safety.

As food prices, health care, utilities, and taxes continue to rise many senior homeowners are struggling and are forced to make the unfortunate choice between meeting basic needs and necessary safety home repairs. At present only half of the disabled seniors over age 65 have the home modifications they believe they need. This leaves thousands of seniors without handrails, grab bars, ramps, elevators or stair lifts, and other structural modifications necessary to live safely in their homes.

How Can You Help?

Utilizing skilled volunteers, The Volunteer Center Program Helping Hands, offers safety related home repair to low-income senior home owners free of charge.

In the last year the program was able to provide safety related home repairs to 200 low-income senior homeowners because community members, local clubs, and area businesses came forward to donate supplies and over 700 volunteer hours to projects ranging from installing hand-rails or grab-bars, to repairing broken steps.

Helping Hands is a current beneficiary for the Nickels for NonProfits program at Whole Foods Market, located at 911 Soquel Ave Santa Cruz, CA. Every time you bring in your own bag for your groceries, you will receive a 5¢ to donate to the non-profit of your choosing.

New Federal Report Shows Greatest Spike in Volunteers Since 2003

Despite difficult economic times, the number of Americans volunteering in their communities jumped by 1.6 million last year, the largest increase in six years, according to a report recently released by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

The Corporation's annual Volunteering in America report found that 63.4 million Americans volunteered through a formal organization last year, giving more than 8.1 billion hours of volunteer service worth an estimated $169 billion.

Americans have responded to tough economic times by volunteering in big numbers,” said Patrick Corvington, the Corporation's CEO. “What we're seeing is the depth of the American spirit and generosity at its best. People are turning toward problems, working with their neighbors to find solutions to real problems, from homelessness to the dropout crisis.”

Previous research would suggest that volunteering should drop during an economic downturn, because volunteer rates are higher among job-holders and homeowners. Instead, volunteering increased at the fastest rate in six years, and the volunteer rate went up among all race and ethnic groups.

The Volunteering in America research is produced by the Corporation as part of its efforts to expand the reach and impact of America's volunteers. The research is the most comprehensive data on volunteering ever assembled, and it includes a volunteer data profile for all states, including the District of Columbia, and hundreds of cities, including data on volunteer rates, rankings, area-specific trends, and analysis.

The Happiest Place on Earth making Santa Cruz even happier

“We’ve received over $20,000 worth of volunteer service” said Gail Wright, of Monterey Bay Horsemanship and Therapeutic Center. “The volunteers have been a wonderful and invaluable resource for us.”

Gail is speaking of the, “Give a Day, Get a Day” program, where Disney, in partnership with the HandsOn Network, hoped to engage one million Americans in service to their community by offering a free pass to one of their theme parks in exchange for a day of their time to a local agency. On Tuesday, March 9^th, Disney annouced they had given away their millionth free pass. Inspiring one million volunteers nationwide took a mere ten weeks.

Here in Santa Cruz, over 1,800 eager volunteers registered to serve at one of the many service projects put on by eleven Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County partner agencies. Since January, residents have done everything from get their hands dirty in compost at the Homeless Garden Project’s compost constrution, to sorting donated food at the Food Bank, to binding new children’s books generously donated by Bookshop Santa Cruz at Beach Flats Community Center.

Many folks were serving their community for the first time, and the Volunteer Center received innumerable positive comments from folks who had a such great time that they have chosen to continue serving Santa Cruz with the agency they volunteered for. The HandsOn Network hoped the program would spark a “life-long service journey,” especially for first time volunteers.

Santa Cruz has much to be proud of, with several hundred non-profits in the county in addition to one of the top ten largest Volunteer Centers in the US.

“Volunteers are essential to keeping our community’s non-profits and public services running,” said Christine Loewe of the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz. “Many programs simply could not exist without willing community members sharing their time and talents.”

Deck the Halls - Offer to decorate a nursing home, assisted living or rehabilitation center for the holidays.
Grant A Wish - Contact a local organization that is hosting a "Wish Tree" and purchase a gift from the tree. The Volunteer Centers Adopt A Family program has "wishes" at the following businesses: Wells Fargo Banks in Santa Cruz, Capitola, Aptos, an Freedom, The Nickelodean in Santa Cruz and Aptos, The Del Mar Downtown, and Santa Cruz County Bank in Aptos and Watsonville.
Shop - Next time you visit the grocery store, pick up extra canned goods or holiday meal items to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank. Collection bins are available throughout the county.
Support Utility Payment Assistance - Many families need extra help to keep lights and heat on during the cold winter months. Donate to a local agency that assists with utility payment needs such as Valley Churches United Mission www.vcum.org
Bake Treats - Make a batch of your favorite holiday goodies for a local organization serving community meals. The following organizations will take home baked goods- Santa Cruz Vets Hall, Mariposa Wellness Center, and Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes.

The SH Cowell Foundation Awards $150,000 Challenge Grant for the Development of New Mid-County Community Center

The S.H. Cowell Foundation has awarded a $150,000 challenge grant to support an innovative public/private partnership that will result in a green, rent-free home for two of the community’s crucial non-profits, the Volunteer Centers of Santa Cruz County and Community Bridges' Live Oak Family Resource Center. The Cowell Foundation will match each dollar donated, up to $150,000, to the “Opening Doors to Community” capital campaign between now and December 15, 2009.

“Imagine every penny the Volunteer Center and Live Oak Family Resource Center raises for the next 30 years going directly to serving the community through programs; not debt service, or rent, or repairs,” said Karen Delaney of the Volunteer Centers. “Imagine 300 more families each year accessing essential services like health screening, parenting classes and health insurance enrollment. Imagine 1,000 additional volunteers every year helping clean up graffiti; mentoring at-risk youth; providing rides and home repair services to seniors; teaching parents to read and hundreds of other critical tasks that lead to a more vibrant, livable community.”

The $10 million cost of the new 7,000 square foot, two-story facility is covered by the Santa Cruz County Redevelopment Agency and is designed to fit the two agencies’ needs. Upon completion, building ownership will transfer to the Santa Cruz County Human Services Department (HSD). The HSD, a partner to both community programs, will execute a renewable 30-year lease of the building with both organizations at no lease cost to either one, contingent upon their raising $1 million for long-term maintenance. The two organizations are conducting a joint capital campaign, “Opening Doors to Community,” to raise the necessary funds.

“This is a public/private partnership of the best kind, one that will benefit local families, children, and seniors for generations to come,” said John Leopold, First District Supervisor. “The new facility will allow both non-profits to increase the ability to support families, seniors and youth while increasing community engagement and serving as a model example of how co-location and collaboration can enhance sustainability throughout these economic times and into the future.”

Environmental considerations are key to the new building with its design reaching for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification as a green building. Features include a solar energy system, heated cork floors and many windows and clearstories that make use of natural light airflow. The state-of-the-art solar panel system will significantly reduce energy bills, creating an estimated savings of several hundred dollars per month. Shared space includes a kitchen, grounds and a conference room capable of providing access and benefit to other neighborhood groups.

Elizabeth Schilling, Director of Community Bridges Live Oak Family Resource Center said, “For the last three years the Cowell Foundation has helped to fund pre-development work for this building project. The Foundation believes in the potential of the people of Live Oak and their investment has been deep. We are so grateful for this latest show of support that will help us complete such an ambitious campaign.”

2009 Be the Difference Awards

We were so pleased to have such a fabulous turn-out for the 2009 Be the Difference Awards Lunch on Thursday Oct 22 at the Cocoanut Grove. Thank -you to all community members who joined us in celebration of those who make a difference in our community through their volunteer contributions. We look forward to seeing you again next year!

This year 36 nominees were recognized and 5 received special honors. Below are the stories of our 2009 Be the Difference Winners:

Santa Cruz Seaside Company- through its various entities SC Beach Boardwalk, Cocoanut Grove, and Boardwalk Bowl, the Seaside Company continues a family legacy of community support for hundreds of non-profit organizations and schools with donations, in-kind contributions, release time for volunteering and special events. They also provide scholarships for their employees to attend community college or universities.

Classic Cleaners uses its resources to directly benefit the less fortunate in our community. They have worked with the Walnut Ave. Women’s Shelter, have helped people prepare for job interviews and regularly support non-profit organizations. All 18 employees participate in these volunteer efforts. Classic Cleaners has touched thousands of lives and is a role model for giving back to the community.

David Heald's dedication and willingness to lead in positive, meaningful ways is an inspiration to many. Aside from running a growing local bank he continuously volunteers for dozens of non-profit organizations and foundations- focusing on community development, helping people with developmental disorders, and small business development. His leadership style affirms every person’s strength and inherent worth. He is a visionary leader who encourages and fosters community involvement in his friends and employees.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz recruits volunteers to serve as mentors to children in Santa Cruz County who are at greatest risk of school truancy and drop-out, drug use, teen pregnancy and/or criminal activity. Volunteers from Big Brothers Big Sisters help kids to believe in themselves and their potential. We have all heard the saying that “It takes a village to raise a child.” Big Brothers Big Sisters represents the best example of this concept.

Kitty Bolte is passionate about the environment, sustainable gardens and providing educational opportunities for other young people. She has been an active volunteer for many years through numerous organizations and community projects. She tutors students at the Beach Flats Community Center, she has volunteered at the Community Agroecology Network (CAN), and she established a garden at the Pacific Collegiate School as well as a garden club. Kitty’s dedication and initiative show that regardless of age you can make a difference in your community.

Honoring the volunteers who make our community a better place to live

While at times it is easy to get bogged down by the day to day tasks of working, there are those days that stand out and make me think, "I LOVE my job."

This morning I had one of those fabulous ah-ha moments during a meeting at Dominican Hospital to determine this year's winners for the 3rd Annual Be the Difference Awards. Surrounded by leaders from the business, civic, media, and community sectors we poured over the stories of volunteers devoted to giving their time for the betterment of our County.

Their stories were not only inspiring but reminded me that everyday, each of us, positively benefits from volunteerism. We find volunteers at the hospital information desk, the library, on the soccer or baseball field, as ushers at the Symphony, as docents in our parks, or behind the scenes at nearly every non-profit. These volunteer stories reflect that everywhere in our community there is work being done to create change for the better.

Here in Santa Cruz County, we are fortunate to have a lively and diverse tradition of volunteering. I personally feel fortunate to have the opportunity to help organize the "Be the Difference" awards because it gives me an opportunity to thank those individuals, groups, non-profits and businesses who make my life easier and my community a better place to live. We recognize that while many would like to serve our community, at times it is challenging to commit to a regular volunteer schedule and therefore we are always looking for new opportunities that are easy and yet meaningful. The Volunteer Centers are pleased to announce we have partnered with the United Way create a new avenue of such opportunities.

The goal is to provide community members with the opportunity to not only help a local non-profit agency but also get to know their local United Way partner agencies and see, first hand, what they are doing to make Santa Cruz County a better place for all. Each month a new opportunity will be featured on our 1-800 Volunteer website.

On October 3rd and 4th, volunteers are needed to support the Hospice Oktoberfest benefit. This fun and lively event includes an Oktoberfest inspired lunch, live accordion music, a silent auction, a live wine auction, cash drawings and arts, crafts and antique sales. All proceeds go directly to Hospice to help them provide support to individuals and families living with life-threatening illnesses. 1st Annual Trivia Challenge Sept 25th

This month in honor of National Literacy Month, the Literacy Program of the Volunteer Centers of Santa Cruz County is offering a creative new way to support literacy education. On Friday September 25th they will host the first Annual Trivia Challenge from 6-10 PM at the Civic Auditorium in downtown Santa Cruz. Trivia Buffs and literacy supporters are invited to join for an evening of food, drinks, raffles and trivia competition. Teams of three will test their knowledge against fellow competitors and the top three teams will be awarded plaques. John Laird will serve as the event Emcee and attendees are invited to come casual, glamorous, or in costume.

“This year as funding at the state and federal level has dropped significantly we were looking for a creative way to generate new funds for the program and the Trivia Contest seemed to be the perfect fit. Our tagline for the event is … Because literacy is the answer”, states Event Chair Susan Cabrera

Program funds are needed now more than ever. Literacy Program staff are facing a 30% budget shortfall. “ We currently have 177 students who have been matched with a volunteer tutor supporting them in their efforts to read, write, and speak English. Since it’s inception, this free program has taught over 10,000 individuals through one-on-one and group instruction and our students consistently rate 20% above state adult education standards. This is a record we are committed to maintaining and we hope the proceeds from the Trivia Event can help to sustain our program”, states Cabrera.

The Literacy Program’s mission is to stem the tide of illiteracy in the local community. According to a National Assessment of Adult Literacy over 13% of residents across Santa Cruz County lack basic literacy skills. As stated by the National Institute Pro Literacy, in the U.S 30 million people over age 16 — 14 percent of the country’s adult population — don’t read well enough to understand a newspaper story written at the eighth grade level or fill out a job application. Low literacy’s effects cost the U.S. $225 billion or more each year in non-productivity in the workforce, crime, and loss of tax revenue due to unemployment.

“ We hope through the Trivia Challenge to outreach to a broader audience and bring much needed attention to the important value of literacy programs in our county”, states Volunteer Centers Executive Director Karen Delaney.

Join the LIteracy Program at the 2nd Annual Kitchen Tour

Join the Literacy Program of the Volunteer Center at the 2nd Annual Kitchen Tour on August 16th from 12-4:30PM. Driving at your leisure between Santa Cruz, Capitola, and Soquel, you'll stop at six gastronomic sanctuaries. At each kitchen you will have the opportunity to peruse top of the line appliances, cabinets, and architecture.
Tour booklets are $15 for one or $25 for two, and include home photos, descriptions, and directions to each kitchen. Booklets are available now at area stores including Bookshop Santa Cruz, Bookworks Aptos, Capitola Book Cafe, Easy Care Cabinets on Mission, SC Greenspace and Santa Cruz Kitchen and Bath.

Another Great Year at the Human Race

On Wednesday evening with a crowd of over 100, the Volunteer Center celebrated the completion of another successful year at the Human Race. BE THE DIFFERENCE Tip of the Week- It Only Takes a Cup of Coffee

Being a recent migrant from the Pacific Northwest, I am a latte lover. In the depths of a Washington winter under skies of perpetual dusk, nothing could really sway a day better than a well-made cup of coffee. My $4.00 cup is indeed an indulgence, and lately, as many of us find ourselves doing, I refrain from taking too many indulgences. But….. I am still willing to partake in this small one.

I share this because I recently tossed out the question to our online communities, “What do you believe it takes to make a difference?”. Answers ranged from lending a hand, to helping your neighbor, to picking up trash, or taking a simple moment to care. What it seemed to boil down to for many people is…. it only takes a cup of coffee.

It is the small things we do that can have a big impact, particularly if each of us is willing to do just a little. We can’t all devote our lives away in service to our community but we can give a latte’s worth of our time or finances each week.

If I were to contribute one latte worth of my finances a week for one year that’s about a $200 contribution, a substantial amount that most any non-profit would love to consistently receive from individual donors. A latte worth of my time might look like lending 4 hours a month. There are myriad ways I can contribute to making a difference in four short hours each month.

Rising Above the Cacophony

The cacophony of need in our community is great. Each day we are inundated by the discordant voices of struggling community members, elected officials with grim budget news, or non-profits worried about keeping their doors open. Aside from walking blissfully through our days with our hands over our ears what else might we do?

I can’t help but think there is a silver lining in the dark cloud -an opportunity to re-affirm the purpose of community, to rise above the cacophony, neighbor to neighbor. Santa Cruz County is diverse and unique. Since moving here only a year and a half ago I have recognized a great pride. So many people seem to love where they live and are passionate about the quality of life that has been established. At local community meetings long-time residents proudly raise their hands to say they have weathered their days in Santa Cruz County. Many young people who grew up here seem eager to find ways to stay home rather than following their national counterparts in the rush off to new communities; and as stated in today’s Sentinel, The independent research group, Gallup Poll -- says residents of Scotts Valley, the San Lorenzo Valley and parts of Mid-County are the happiest in the nation.

If we love the quality of life that has been established then we can choose to sustain the foundations that make Santa Cruz County a welcoming community. We can choose to see tight financial times as a golden opportunity to step outside of ourselves and more effectively collaborate. Barn roofs were not raised by individuals standing alone on their porches calling out for help but by community members stepping up to help one another.

Everywhere we look there are challenges to be met and so many programs working to meet these challenges. As budgets continue to decline, we can choose to step forward to shore up these programs through difficult financial times. Each of us has the capacity to give, whether it is of our finances or our time.

The Human Race Walkathon and Fun Run is one great platform that comes to mind where community members and local agencies can stand together. The Race provides the opportunity for over 150 non-profits, schools, and churches to step out collectively to ask for community support. This year’s race will happen on May 9th, 2009 at Natural Bridges State Park and includes a complimentary breakfast and BBQ, music along the course, a costume contest, and prizes. Volunteers Address the Needs of Low-Income Seniors

Last week while researching housing issues for seniors for an upcoming press release I was struck by the extraordinary burdens seniors are currently facing in maintaining their homes and livelihood.

Seniors have the highest home-ownership rates of any age group. With rates of nearly 80%, seniors age 65 and over account for about one-quarter of all homeowners. Many seniors associate their homes with their independence, livelihood, or connection to community and define their homes as their single most important asset.

According to the Senior Economic Security Index (SESI), a new research project developed by The Institute on Assets and Social Policy at Brandeis University and Demos, 1 in 3 senior households have no money left after meeting essential expenses.

It is clear that as food prices, healthcare, utilities, and taxes continue to rise many senior homeowners are struggling and are forced to make the unfortunate choice between meeting basic needs and necessary safety home repairs. At present only half of the disabled seniors over age 65 have the home modifications they believe they need. This leaves thousands of seniors without handrails, grab bars, ramps, elevators or stair lifts, and other structural modifications necessary to live safely in their homes.

In looking for light within the gloom of these headlines, I turn to the stories of individuals who have stepped up to be the difference. It is heartening to know there are those among us who recognize a need and are willing to take action. The Santa Cruz County Sentinel, reported in yesterday's paper on a variety of local non-profits tackling issues for seniors. Indeed, we are fortunate to have such a vast array of programs supporting seniors in our community such as Meals on Wheels, Grey Bears, Senior Network Services, and the Transportation Program.

Behind each of these programs is a dedicated cadre of volunteers who believe that their actions can make a difference in the lives of struggling seniors.- Individuals who recognize giving one day of their time and talent might bring hope for a better day to another.

Program Coordinator Carol McGuire of the Volunteer Center program Helping Hands, knows her program simply could not exist without the willingness of volunteers. In the last year the program was able to offer safety related home repairs to 190 low-income senior homeowners because community members, local clubs, and area businesses came forward to donate supplies and over 500 volunteer hours to projects ranging from installing hand-rails or grab-bars, to repairing broken steps. One group in particular, The Santa Cruz Rotary, has been a generous supporter for over 10 years. Each year they donate smoke detectors so that every helping hands home can be outfitted with a functioning detector.

While the headlines may be bleak and so many are struggling, I feel strongly that the enduring spirit of community is alive. Each day with every new volunteer that walks through the door, I am reminded that everywhere there is work being done to create change for the better.

50 new volunteers attended our annual February Literacy Program trainings where they had a wonderful time learning about the program and preparing to teach English as a Second Language. They will be matched with the student of their choice and will meet together for weekly lessons. Looks like the three new tutors spelling out short for a class exercise got it down to the T!

This year for the Martin Luther King Day Holiday, the Volunteer Center outreached to area agencies registered on our online volunteer opportunities database 1-800volunteer.org. Agencies were asked to create one-day projects for volunteers to attend. 8 agencies stepped up to organize or support events - Bridge of Hope, Monterey Bay Horsemanship and Therapeutic Center, The Homeless Youth Coffee House at the Red Church, The Homeless Garden Project, Loaves and Fishes, Quail Hollow Ranch, and Save our Shores.

The response from the community was overwhelmingly positive. Nearly 400 individuals answered the call to serve in Santa Cruz County! Local residents turned out to serve meals to the homeless, share their time with nursing home residents, pull invasive plants, or support handicapped youth programs. A number of spontaneous volunteer groups stepped in to organize beach clean-ups including two area mom’s groups, The Redwood Non-Violence Community, and the Santa Cruz Montessori School.

It is our hope the building momentum for service will translate into an increased number of long-term volunteers for area non-profits. Volunteers are needed everyday and are vital to keeping area non-profits and public services running. Martin Luther King Day Media Buzz

We have spent the past 24 hours attempting to keep up with our phone lines. On the other end of each call has been a caring community member interested in stepping forward to give of their time on Martin Luther King Day. The national call to service seems to have re-ignited a spirit for community giving and the media has lead the charge to keep volunteerism at the forefront of our attention.

Time Magazine reports their top news story of the week as "Obama's National Call to Service" and issued a special report this week on "The Call to Serve". Earlier in the week, on the Colbert Report Steven Colbert chided, "...And, Alan Khazei wants Americans to volunteer!" after which he berated the Director of Be the Change.org for encouraging our nation to join in the movement to serve others. Today the Huffington Post is awash in service headlines ranging from the Facebook Pledge to service, Starbucks new "You In?" Campaign offering up free cups of coffee to all customers willing to pledge 5 hours of their time, to blogger and novelist Trey Ellis suggesting you should "Volunteer your Fear Away".

As Ellis states, "When times are most troubled it's easiest to close yourself off from the suffering of others. But what if we zig instead of zag? Instead of wrapping ourselves up in fear, and hunkering down until this depression blows over, .....What if we capitalize on this New Year and this new administration and pledge ourselves to helping those with less? If we all pitch in won't we all come out on the other side a little faster?"

Today we want to encourage our fellow non-profits to bask in their moment to shine as entities serving the greater good and can only be pleased that the Santa Cruz Community has chosen to "zig instead of zag" . Keep those phones ringing!

We are highly inspired by the recent National Call to serve. As a nation, we are at a great crossroad. We find ourselves in a time of enormous need and yet great promise. Both the need and public enthusiasm are there to re-ignite a spirit of service. Here at the Volunteer Center we have been so pleased by the number of individuals who have recognized this need and come forward to donate their time to our local public services, non-profits, schools, and community programs. In this time of economic downturn, we have seen an increasing number of registered volunteers on our volunteer matching website, currently averaging up to 60 new registered volunteers and over 2000 new visitors each month searching for volunteer opportunities. We are fortunate that everyday individuals step up in expected and unexpected ways to be the difference in Santa Cruz County!

We invite community members to join us in the call to service on the Martin Luther King Holiday Jan 19th, 2009. For the past 14 years The MLK Holiday has been recognized not as a day off, but a day on. In an effort to support the national call to serve, General Powell unveiled www.USAService.org where Americans can sign up for projects or register their event. Local students partner with the Grafitti Removal Project on 9/11

To mark the 7th anniversary of 9/11, yesterday students Monterey Bay Academy chose to cancel classes and send their entire student body of over 200 students into the community as a symbolic counter-attack against terrorism through acts of kindness in their local community.

Fifty MBA students partnered with the Santa Cruz Volunteer Center Graffiti Removal Project to remove graffiti in areas surrounding the Simpkins Swim Center in Santa Cruz, and areas near The Hook at the end of 41st street. The Graffiti Project organizes community paint-outs throughout the year, provides grafitti prevention kits, and relies on the volunteer efforts of concerned citizens, such as the Monterey Bay Academy students and faculty, to keep the community safe, clean, and graffiti free.

“It’s a privilege for Monterey Bay Academy to be able to partner with our local Santa Cruz and Watsonville communities to show our appreciation for the services and support they give to our school,” stated MBA Principal Tim Kubrock.

The remaining student body participated in other projects such as painting the wharf, assisting at the Homeless Garden Project, Santa Cruz Health Care Center, Sienna House Maternity Home, Harkin Slough Restoration, and tutoring 2nd graders at Calabasas K-6 Public School.

Social Networking and Non-Profits

At this year’s Annual Conference on National and Community Service held in June in Atlanta Georgia, I attended a number of excellent workshops on online marketing and the use of social networking to improve non-profit outreach efforts. While I believe it is in our best interest to tap into the multitude of on-line options to expand our non-profit outreach I also recognize that for our program staff and fellow agencies unfamiliar with these online tools this can be an overwhelming process to wade through. Often the question arises “Why would I care about this?” Here are a few thoughts:
Two Reasons to Care about Social Networking:

The internet is a way of life for Americans of all ages. According to a recent New York Times Article, “despite more distractions than ever, we’re finding even more time to plant ourselves in front of screens”. In May, the average American spent 26 hours on the Internet and Two-thirds of Internet users, 119 million people, watched on-line video. In any given month nearly 162 million use the Internet. According to a study by Pew Internet & American Life Project, over 70 percent of Americans aged 50 to 64 use the web.
Outreach to a broader range of people in less time. Social networking sites provide platforms to broadcast a cause or agency need quickly, and reach well beyond your email list. They also allow you to reach out to audiences that haven't traditionally been involved with your organization - like younger people, and people who are new to the area.

Get Started with Social Networking:

Start a blog or comment on blogs- Blogs provide easy ways to post your agency needs, share event photos, and upload video with the push of a button. All of our local news media sources have blogs and with a vast cross section of readership you can reach multiple markets in our community by choosing a few blogs to regularly comment on. In doing so you reach all of the clientele visiting their site. If you are keeping up with on-line local news take the extra five minutes in your day to share a comment and post a link to your website.

Join us on Facebook and Myspace. – Two sites we use are Facebook and Myspace to outreach to our younger volunteers. Since setting up our Myspace account we have received over 200 additional visitors a month to our 1-800 volunteer database referred through Myspace. Social networking websites are being used regularly by millions of people, 67% of those age 18-29, 21% of those 30-39, and 6% of those 40+ . A social network service focuses on building online communities of people who share interests and activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others. 28 Years and Still Running.....

I have been looking through old race photos in preparation for the 28th Annual Human Race Awards Ceremony happening this Wednesday June 25th and thought others might also enjoy a look back at the race over the years. A number of organizations have been with us since the inception of our pledge walk and fun run in 1980 and therefore may recognize a younger version of a friendly face.

Being a first year participant of the Human Race, on the day of the event I was struck by the people power needed for a smoothly run race and the willingness of volunteers to step in to make this happen. But, in viewing old photos of smiling participants this afternoon I was more taken by the long term community impact this race has had. When I come across a community member on the street wearing an old t-shirt ( I hear the glow in the dark shirts were a big hit) or when regaled with a funny story from our veteran staff that often begins with "Ohhhh, remember that one year ....!!! " I recognize that this race is, for so many, not simply a one day event but truly represents an enduring legacy of community.

Maybe you recall a certain year with particular fondness, have a heartwarming Human Race story from over the years, or a touching moment from your interactions with others at the event. If so, we would love to hear your comments.

The 28th Annual Human Race

What an amazing year at the 28th Annual Human Race! With nearly 130 non-profits, schools, and churches represented and over 3000 individual fundraisers one need not look far to find a neighbor, friend, or family member who was impacted by this year’s race. It was highly inspiring to see the range of individuals, of all ages and abilities, who walked in celebration of their chosen cause. The sidewalk along West Cliff Drive was filled by a jovial crowd of caring community members. The crones were back again promoting peace and the banana clan returned as well. Mothers pushing strollers in support of their community pre-school walked along side the colorful flags carried by the Diversity Center. Animal Friends Rescue walked with their stately cast of dogs up for adoption and Jacob’s Heart Walkers educated the crowd about the impacts of cancer with their heart shaped signs while youth from various schools proudly carried their school banners through the 10K course. In all despite initially chilly skies, the tone was bright and marked by the signature merriment of Santa Cruz.

Thus far, participants have fundraised nearly 90,000 on-line and an additional 80,000 was collected on the day of the event making this our most profitable year. We will continue to accept pledges and on-line donations until May 31st. We highly encourage participants to ride the wave of enthusiasm generated by the event by updating donation letters, posting day of the event photos, and sharing the day’s success with those who might provide further support.

Volunteers are our hidden heroes. They work in our community on a daily basis contributing to the greater good and provide the anchor to needed social services.
